11 Easy Ways To Prepare Your Home This Fall
As the seasons change and the temperature cools, homeowners need
to ensure their homes are ready. We’ve created a checklist to help you get ready this fall.
- Get your furnace inspected.
Hire a professional HVAC company to check for heating efficiency, test for leaks, and change the filter.
YDI TIP: You should change your air filter every few months, so stock up!
- Install a programmable thermostat.
A programmable thermostat is a great cost saving option. You can set the thermostat to lower the temperature automatically at night and when you’re not home, which can result in heating cost savings.
- Check your smoke detectors.
Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly.
YDI Tip: It’s a good idea to change the batteries when you change your clocks.
- Roof check.
You can easily do a visual check from the ground. You want to look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles.
- Check the chimney and fireplace.
If you have a wood fireplace and use it often, you may want to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional.
- Inspect siding.
Check home exterior for cracks or holes.
- Clean the gutters.
Remove leaves, nests, and debris from gutters and check for leaks.
- Check water drainage.
Check downspouts for any obstructions and clear if needed. YDI Tip: You will want to direct water away from the home foundation, walkways, and driveways. You can easily add extensions to downspouts to direct the water further from your home or garage.
- Turn off exterior water faucets and store hoses.
You want to disconnect and drain your garden hoses. Shut off exterior faucets, and you may need to turn off the valve inside your home as well.
- Inspect trees.
Check for damaged limbs that may break or that are too close to power lines or the roof.
- Leaf removal.
Rake and remove leaves from the yard. Put into a compost pile if you have one. Alternatively, put into yard garbage bags and leave at the curb for community pick up. In Sherwood Park click here for the pickup up schedule.
